Cardiovascular diseases: Heart Attacks & Strokes

Cardiovascular diseases: Heart Attacks & Strokes

Every 36 seconds, someone dies from heart and blood vessel diseases, America’s No. 1 killer.

Heart attacks and strokes are usually acute events and are mainly caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing to the heart or brain. The most common reason for this is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the blood vessels that supply the heart or brain. Strokes can also be caused by bleeding from a blood vessel in the brain or from blood clots.

Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability.

Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados

“Everybody has a heart"; this is the motto of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados. This speaks to the fact that all of us as individuals should be committed to living healthy lifestyles.

The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados Inc. is a non-profit organization. The Foundation was founded in 1985 as the Heart Foundation of Barbados and in 2006 embraced stroke to become the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health's report for several years has ranked disease of the heart and blood vessels as a leading cause of death in Barbados as indeed it is internationally. It is against this background that the Foundation brings together physicians and laymen committed to voluntarily addressing this major health problem.

The Foundation is a non-governmental organisation and receives no funding from government. Therefore the organisation is very heavily dependent upon donations and fees to carry out its work and relies considerably upon the financial support of individual Barbadians.
